Cryo-ultramicrotomy enables to make  thin sections of constant thickness with very soft materials that cannot be cut at ambient temperature. This technique has been improved by biologists and suits polymer preparation. After cooling down of the specimen, a section is sliced up using a diamond knife which has been previously cooled down. The material is brought close to transition temperature Tg (if known) to obtain a harder consistency.
